I appreciate that both of these women realized they’d be seen from the shoulders up mostly, and made an effort to bring VISUAL INTEREST to this moment. SJP decided to liven things up with a copper lamé look and a fancy fireplace moment (two of my own favorite things), and TPH went for Ariel mermaid hair and fancy globes, which are ALSO favorites (and the latter has the benefit of being a visual pun).

Let’s take a slightly closer look at these Zoom Decors:

78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Nominations, USA - 03 Feb 2021

I love Taraji and this hair color is so cute on her. I also enjoy that she’s in her…office? Dressing room? Awards Room? So we can admire her accolades and appreciate that she has a literal slightly golden globe back there. I wish I could see her outfit! Move over, chyron!

Here’s Sarah:

78th Annual Golden Globe Awards, Nominations, USA - 03 Feb 2021

I enjoy that the metal fireplace screen behind her slightly makes it look like she’s wearing EXTREMELY DRAMATIC Lady Gaga-y shoulders. I also enjoy this very complicated candelabra; this whole corner of her home feels very Chic Miss Havisham — which is, I must stress, a compliment.

Do you want to see who got nominated? The Golden Globes are happening on February 28th — or, as I think of it, on The Oscars Date – and apparently whether or not it will have human people in attendance is a big ???????????!!!!???????. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are hosting on separate coasts, so I suspect a lot of it will be virtual. Which is good! There are at least a few people on this list of nominees that I think we’d rather not kill:

Let’s discuss! My main takeaway here is that (a) wow, I have seen [like many folks] ZERO movies this year, and therefore am not qualified to weigh in there at all,  (b) THREE women being nominated for Best Director is rad, (c) Vulture is covering what they believe to be the biggest snubs, in particular I May Destroy You, (d) the nomination of Emily in Paris is EXTREMELY HFPA!!!, and finally, (e) this would have been a very fantastic in-person red carpet. Sigh.
