The release of the Barbie movie pictures has been brilliant. First, there was the ridiculously charming shot of Margot Robbie grinning from inside a car, and then of course Ryan Gosling as Ken, whom people worried was too blond or too old or too… not right, though to me he seems perfect and perfectly drippy in that photo (this is, after all, CLEARLY a very affectionate comedy, yes?). But it got people talking. And now America Ferrera is involved, and there are neon roller skates, and some starry pink bell-bottoms:
It’s been rolled out so well that even the skeptics, or the formerly disinterested, might not be able to resist buying a ticket to figure out for themselves what the deal is with Ryan as Ken. I am intrigued, and I wasn’t even into Barbie as a kid — although I did have one, the best one, the MOST IMPORTANT one: Peaches and Cream Barbie, which apparently you can buy from Wal-Mart for $345?!? Dear God, why didn’t I keep that Barbie? THIS is why people become hoarders. There is always that moment when you’re like, “I DID NEED IT AGAIN! I WAS CORRECT.”
