How great is this? FINALLY, the seminal Jackie Collins 1983 masterwork Hollywood Wives is available on e-readers, so you can carry it with you always. I must admit, this book was highly educational for me when I stole it from my mother and read it at an age where it was totally inappropriate for me to do so. I have never forgotten the scene in one of her books — I think it is this one! — wherein one of the heroines is having sex with an old dude, and his penis gets stuck in her (possibly because he died; I need to get my own digital copy to refresh the details) and she has to be rushed to the hospital. It has seriously stuck with me my entire life. No pun intended. (Jackie Collins was so great at scenes like that; The Power Trip opens with a man being shot at the moment of orgasm. It’s on the first page!)

Let’s revisit the back of the book blurb, in case you need a refresher too:

They lunch at Ma Maison and the Bistro on salads and hot gossip. They cruise Rodeo Drive in their Mercedes and Rolls, turning shopping at Giorgio and Gucci into an art form. They pursue the body beautiful at the Workout and Body Asylum. Dressed by St. Laurent and Galanos, they dine at the latest restaurants on the rise and fall of one another’s fortunes. They are the Hollywood Wives, a privileged breed of women whose ticket to ride is a famous husband.  Hollywood. At its most flamboyant.

Oh my god, sold.  You will want to revisit this book by the pool this summer.

THE TASK: We have five digital copies to give away! I’m going to pick the winners at random, but please comment and tell us your own favorite beach read of summers past.

THE RULES: All entries must be posted in the comments of this post by 9 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, April 20th.  Unfortunately, this contest is not open to Kobo users, due to an issue with gifting digital downloads to the Kobo interface. All other e-readers are eligible. FYI, if this is the first time you’ve commented here, the system will automatically kick you into comment moderation, but don’t worry, I will rescue you. (Prizing courtesy of Chances, Inc. Open to residents of the United States and Canada only. Thank you!)
