La Gerwig is in Italy as an actor this time — she’s in (her husband) Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don Delillo’s White Noise, which I admittedly have not read since 1996, but which I think might have been tricky to adapt — and she has, so far, been doing it primarily in shades of black and white. It’s possible she wants to continue to look serious and directorial herself (although she is also clearly having a blast), but maybe she just loves the black and white cookie.
