‘Twas a night of a thousand stars, and a handful of twinkles among them. Fun fact, a phrase I am overusing right now and I promise I will work on it: Florence was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star award in 2017, alongside her future Little Women and Dune 2 co-star Timothee Chalamet, and Josh O’Connor and Tessa Thompson; they all lost to future Oscar winner Daniel Kaluuya. What a stacked category. Actually, it’s a fascinating one: Eva Green once beat two people who were nominated on this night, Cillian Murphy and Emily Blunt. Tom Hardy beat both Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone. And Jack O’Connell, then star of Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken, took it ahead of Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Margot Robbie, Miles Teller, and Shailene Woodley. The winners of that one may not always seem correct in retrospect, but that category has a pretty strong track record of being right about its nominees.
