I saw a trailer for The Bride in front of Wuthering Heights, and it looks like Frankenstein by way of Bonnie and Clyde and Poor Things, with perhaps a dash of Joker: Folie a Deux. It’s a lot. I wonder what’s in the water right now that two filmmakers — Guillermo del Toro and here Maggie Gyllenhaal — decided to resurrect this universe in the same year. This actually happens more often than you’d think. Case in point: the two Aretha Franklin projects coming out near each other, an OJ documentary dropping at basically the same time as the Ryan Murphy dramatization, and now both Lily Collins and Thomasin McKenzie are set to play Audrey Hepburn in different projects. I don’t even know if that includes the one Ariana Grande seemed to be sniffing around? And those are just three examples. What a weird cosmic mind meld.
By the by, the other day, Jessica noted that Annette Bening had skipped the early events for The Bride and has otherwise been keeping a very low profile — but, rest easier, friends, because Annette DID swing by this one. It’s Penelope Cruz who skipped out. Perhaps they can only afford one at a time.
