This was Elle Fanning’s first Oscar nomination, but certainly not her first time in the spotlight — she’s got Emmy nominations and a stint on the Cannes jury under her belt already, in addition to having been a major movie star for a long time. So it probably follows that this awards season wardrobe was basically just…exactly what you’d expect from her. She’s not breaking sartorial ground here, especially because she was never really in the running to win anything. Having said that, her wardrobe was absolutely beautiful. She and longtime stylist Samantha McMillen (also also styles Kirsten Dunst and has really been nailing that assignment) work really well together and I’m sure this was special for them. As I said after the Academy Awards, Elle so regularly opts for a princess gown that her Oscars princess gown maybe didn’t have the same impact as it might have on a person whose personal style we didn’t know as well as we do hers. That’s not to say that it wasn’t beautiful — it was EXTREMELY beautiful. It just wasn’t surprising. I actually would not argue for someone deciding to SURPRISE at the Oscars, but I do wonder if Fanning might branch out her vibe a bit in upcoming years? Let’s discuss!
