Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez are in Cannes promoting Emilia Perez, a “transgender cartel musical,” per one of the reviews, which seem to be either glowing or unimpressed. Zoe plays a lawyer helping a drug lord transition and disappear into that new life, and Selena is the cartel chief’s ex-wife. The lead actress, Karla Sofia Gascon, is trans herself and apparently does play the character pre-transition as well, which must have been emotionally challenging. The project sounds audacious at the very least? Maybe Zoe’s dress can be looked at as… a metaphor? For being bound to something that’s holding you back??? Am I being generous? Maybe.
