Who would have guessed that my own personal Unchanging Mental Image of Cher was from the press conference launching her perfume, “Uninhibited,”  the tagline of which was “BOTTLED, BUT NOT CONTAINED,” and which boasted “top notes of bergamot, orange oil and aldehydic accords. Middle notes of heliotrope, ylang-ylang, geranium, jasmine, rose and tabac. Dry down notes of cedarwood, musk, sandalwood, vanilla and vetiver,” and which you currently purchase on the internet for an incredibly wide variety of prices? Not I, and yet here I am. This is my Canonical Cher. (FWIW, this is also a great place for me to note that the comments about this perfume over at Fragrantica are delightfully fun, as they often are there. If you like talking about perfumes, go waste some time in good health.)
