Quarterback Cam Ward of Miami went first last night, to the Tennessee Titans, and then no QB came off the board until Jaxson Dart at the 25th pick — to a Giants team that wanted him, but not SO much that they were willing to take him with their No. 3 slot. The Jaguars pulled off a big trade to get in at No. 2 and snag two-way king Travis Hunter. But the big news of the draft was less about who got picked and more about who didn’t: Shadeur Sanders, son of Deion, dropped off the board entirely, which means nobody got to see him wear this enormous diamond necklace that’s now kind of an albatross.
Sanders is now slightly at risk of getting picked tomorrow by Cleveland, the only team who even possibly might want a quarterback at the top of round two, and which has two picks before the Las Vegas Raiders — a hotly projected landing spot — can get crack at him. Maybe tonight some teams will fervently call Ohio with trade offers? Sometimes plummeting in the draft is a good thing — you end up with a less desperate team — and then other times, it’s still a minefield of mediocrity. And speaking of mediocrity, the Steelers don’t pick again until Round 3, so I guess they’re not looking too hard at any quarterbacks either. Guys, YOU ARE THE STEELERS. You have a ton of Super Bowls. Drop Aaron Rodgers like a hot potato and pay someone who’s stoked about that. Sheesh.
