Every headline for this was basically, “The Actor Awards, formerly the SAG Awards…” What an unnecessary rebranding, 32 years into this thing. I don’t know if I can pivot, or if I really care enough to; I feel like digging in and hoping they decide it’s a pain in the neck and put it back.

Anyway, the noms were read yesterday morning by Janelle James and Heated Rivalry’s Connor Storrie, both of whom look nice. He’s extra shaggy right now — actually, seeing him next to SAG-AFTRA president Sean Astin made me realize Connor has full hobbit hair here. Perhaps we can have Jacob Tierney reimagine that next; there’s gotta be a LOT of hobbit-related yearning to mine.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A CAST IN A MOTION PICTURE

Frankenstein (Netflix)
Hamnet (Focus Features)
Marty Supreme (A24)
One Battle After Another (Warner Bros)
Sinners (Warner Bros)

I think this SHOULD go to Sinners but will go to One Battle.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Jessie Buckley, Hamnet
Rose Byrne, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Kate Hudson, Song Sung Blue
Chase Infiniti, One Battle After Another
Emma Stone, Bugonia

Wow, Kate Hudson really snuck in there — and over Cynthia Erivo, Renate Reinsve, Eva Victor, Amanda Seyfried, Tessa Thompson, and Julia Roberts (though her movie was widely reviled, so I’m not surprised). I did not see that coming, but Hugh Jackman sure did. God, now I really do have to watch this movie. To be fair, I’ve heard nice things.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE

Timothée Chalamet, Marty Supreme
Leonardo DiCaprio, One Battle After Another
Ethan Hawke, Blue Moon
Michael B. Jordan, Sinners
Jesse Plemons, Bugonia

Come on, MBJ!!!

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Miles Caton, Sinners
Benicio Del Toro, One Battle After Another
Jacob Elordi, Frankenstein
Paul Mescal, Hamnet
Sean Penn, One Battle After Another

I’d love to see Miles Caton take this. He won for Younger Performer at the Critics’ Choice and Elordi won this category, and Caton isn’t up for a Globe. So this is their first face-off. Stellan Skarsgard on the outside looking in!

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE

Odessa A’zion, Marty Supreme
Ariana Grande, Wicked: For Good
Amy Madigan, Weapons
Wunmi Mosaku, Sinners
Teyana Taylor, One Battle After Another

Really curious if Amy Madigan is going to get the Jamie Lee Curtis treatment this year. I do not think JLC should have won; I cannot say the same for Amy because I haven’t seen the movie yet and I’ve heard she is fantastic. I just mean, from a sentimental perspective. Speaking of which, NO ONE from Sentimental Value got in here, which is a surprise given other nominations so far.

OUTSTANDING STUNT ENSEMBLE IN A MOTION PICTURE

F1 (Apple Original Films)
Frankenstein (Netflix)
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (Paramount)
One Battle After Another (Warner Bros)
Sinners (Warner Bros)

Hooray for the stunts!

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY AN ENSEMBLE IN A DRAMA SERIES

The Diplomat (Netflix)
Landman (Paramount+)
The Pitt (HBO Max)
Severance (Apple TV)
The White Lotus (HBO)

Landman?!?  Mmmkay.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Sterling K. Brown, Paradise
Billy Crudup, The Morning Show
Walton Goggins, The White Lotus
Gary Oldman, Slow Horses
Noah Wyle, The Pitt

WOW. No Adam Scott in here is a HUGE surprise to me, especially with The Morning Show kicking around still. Walton Goggins, for my money, is a supporting actor in that show, but since the SAGs rudely persist in pretending there are no supporting performances, then Tramell Tillman should have been in here, period, full stop.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A DRAMA SERIES

Britt Lower, Severance
Parker Posey, The White Lotus
Keri Russell, The Diplomat
Rhea Seehorn, Pluribus
Aimee Lou Wood, The White Lotus

I am once again surprised at Aimee Lou Wood, but you know what, no one is beating Britt or Rhea, so it’s irrelevant I think.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY AN ENSEMBLE IN A COMEDY SERIES

Abbott Elementary (ABC)
The Bear (FX/Hulu)
Hacks (HBO Max)
Only Murders in the Building (Hulu)
The Studio (Apple TV)

It’s weird to me to nominate an ensemble — The Studio — where every actor seems to be doing something different tonally than everyone else, but people love it. Not me!

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Ike Barinholtz, The Studio
Adam Brody, Nobody Wants This
Ted Danson, Inside Man
Seth Rogen, The Studio
Martin Short, Only Murders in the Building

Rooting for the oldies. Danson and Short, please take it home.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A COMEDY SERIES

Kathryn Hahn, The Studio
Catherine O’Hara, The Studio
Jenna Ortega, Wednesday
Jean Smart, Hacks
Kristen Wiig, Palm Royale

No one is beating Jean Smart, right?

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A MALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES

Jason Bateman, Black Rabbit
Owen Cooper, Adolescence
Stephen Graham, Adolescence
Charlie Hunnam, Monster: The Ed Gein Story
Matthew Rhys, The Beast In Me

And no one is beating Adolescence.

OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY A FEMALE ACTOR IN A TELEVISION MOVIE OR LIMITED SERIES

Claire Danes, The Beast In Me
Erin Doherty, Adolescence
Sarah Snook, All Her Fault
Christine Tremarco, Adolescence
Michelle Williams, Dying For Sex

Doherty and Snook won with the critics in different categories, so they should have to arm-wrestle for it. I continue to be galled that Jenny Slate was not widely recognized for Dying for Sex, and I’m not even typically that big a booster of hers. I just thought she was superb.

OUTSTANDING STUNT ENSEMBLE IN A TELEVISION SERIES

Andor (Disney+)
Landman (Paramount+)
The Last of Us (HBO)
Squid Game (Netflix)
Stranger Things (Netflix)
