As I explain whenever this event pops up, per Wiki, “The Laurence Olivier Awards, or simply the Olivier Awards, are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre to recognise excellence in professional theatre in London at an annual ceremony in the capital.” So, basically, the British Tonys (although they seem smaller in scale than the Tonys, as far as I can tell). Unfortunately, that Wiki doesn’t have any sections for “controversy” or “SCANDAL!” but it DOES have a robust trivia section, which is how I know that “[i]n 1985, Patti LuPone tied with herself for an Olivier for her performances as Fantine in the Original London Cast of Les Miserables, and as Moll in The Cradle Will Rock.” Anyway, Miss Patti wasn’t there (obviously; she’s currently on Broadway in Company) but we have loads of familiar faces in outfits for you to see.
