American designer Sergio Hudson dressed Michelle Obama for Wednesday’s Inauguration, and Vice-President Kamala Harris for the evening’s concert. What a huge day for him and for the other American designers; WWD spoke to him and got this lovely comment, as part of their fashion coverage of the events:

Reached by phone in Atlanta, en route from Washington back to L.A., Hudson was emotional: “As a father of daughters, African-American daughters, it means more to me than any project I’ve ever done,” said the designer, who dressed Michelle Obama in a dramatic purple suit and duster coat earlier in the day. “To be a part of something this historic, it’s changing the landscape of how my daughters will see themselves in the future. Being a part of it, I’m so honored.”

Hudson had dressed Michelle Obama before, in a sparkling navy jumpsuit AND a fuchsia suit which is outstanding on her. We more recently saw his work on Issa Rae at the Pandemmys and again on her at the 2018 CFDAs, and Leighton Meester wore him to the 2018 American Music Awards. But my favorite of that batch is this green sparkly dress on Amy Poehler at the 2020 Golden Globes. It and Michelle Obama’s jumpsuit both seem to share some DNA with what Obama wore on Wednesday. Here’s hoping Michelle and Kamala have done for him what Michelle did for Jason Wu, putting his name and his work in the national conversation on a completely new level.

Ergo, I thought we’d look back at Hudson’s Fall 2020 collection, which is the last runway show he had, because I have a shrewd idea we’ll be seeing more of him as the weeks and months pass.
