If Michelle Williams’s award season was the one Where She Was Consistently Nominated But We All Knew She Wasn’t Winning, and Michelle Yeoh’s was The Awards Season Where She Started Winning and Kept Winning and Then We All Knew She Was Likely to Win The Big One, Angela Bassett’s was one Where She Was the Front-Runner For a Long Time And Then Somehow Lost Momentum After The SAGS But It Was Still Pretty Up In the Air Until The Oscars, which seems like — of all those choices — the most emotionally stressful. Regardless of how the Oscars shook out, awards-wise, Angela and her stylist Jennifer Austin (who also styles Brian Tyree Henry, so she had a busy awards season!) seemed to have had the most run on all these red carpets. Let’s revisit!

PS: I may have overlooked this in other stylist’s Instagrams, but I noticed in putting this post together that Jennifer Austin often credits and tags the person who does the tailoring and alterations on these looks, which I think is great. Angela Bassett is always BEAUTIFULLY tailored and it’s cool to see that hard work being credited. It seems like it’s often done by the team at Laura Basci, which also tailored Sandra Oh’s very complicated Giambattista Valli at the Oscars, and appears to often work with Sofia Vergara, who we’ve often said is ALSO very well-tailored.

Also, in case you missed it, in 2020 I wrote a retrospective of Angela Bassett’s red carpet history throughout time. It was a DELIGHT to put together and a pleasure to flip through. She’s always looked gorgeous and seemed great.
