Princess Diana flew to New York on the Concorde for this event, to hand a special award to her friend Liz Tilberis of Harper’s Bazaar, and the CFDA site has a brief but breathless recollection of the crowd reaction — casual fans and celebs alike. Just a year later, she returned to attend the Met Gala with Liz, in a very similar getup: navy dress, same jewels. It surprises me that she was cool with her big splashes on the New York fashion scene were almost indistinguishable, but hey, maybe that’s why she was reportedly so unhappy with that Galliano gown from the ’96 Met.
