Ms. Fisher’s Modern Mysteries is a 1960s-set sequel of sorts to the exploits of Phryne Fisher, involving her long-lost niece. I just binged it the other week, and it was a delightful way to spend four evenings (that’s how many episodes there were in season 1). Geraldine Hakewill is insanely charming in the part, and gets to wear the BEST mod dresses and eye makeup, and the whole thing is very female-driven and satisfying. There is not NEARLY as much casual banging, or any banging, so Phryne herself would be sitting next to me on the couch screaming JUST MAKE OUT ALREADY. But a little lightweight romantic tension is basically the exact and only kind of tension I’m in the mood for right now, so hurrah for season two.
