Michelle Williams was still quite pregnant as of September, so whenever she had that baby — probably anytime in the last six weeks, other than, say, this weekend — she kept it very, very quiet. (She is adept at this.)(Not the “not telling anyone she had the baby part,” because that bit is easy, you just simply do not tell anyone that you had the baby; it’s more that I’m surprised she didn’t get papped while getting some fresh air.) I wonder if they worked the release schedule for The Fabelmans around that, so that she’d be on her feet to come to the premiere. This is, after all, Spielberg’s big semi-autobiographical movie that chronicles a different birth: that of his love of making movies. There’s no way this was premiering without his star, who is going for Best Actress gold.

Anyway, these weeks after childbirth are a very weird, vulnerable time, especially if you have to put yourself on display. This Celine dress (note: NOT her usual Vuitton) did exactly what I imagine she would want: as little as possible, at least outwardly. It didn’t have to be interesting. It didn’t have to be adventurous. It just had to fit, it had to support her in all the places that are unpredictable (post-partum bodies are a TRIP, especially the mammaries), and above all it had to be there, so that she was not naked. My eye goes right over it to her head:

She looks lovely in the gown, but you don’t even miss it when you can’t see it. Her hair often goes too bleached out for me, so that warmer blond is divine, and the bob is soft and adorable. The necklace is the perfect base for it all. My instant reaction was, “Oh, she had the baby, and I LOVE HER HAIR, THIS IS GREAT.” Mission accomplished.
