It’s so insane to me that Jeff Bezos owns The Washington Post now. By the (admittedly few) accounts I’ve heard, he’s been a supportive and smart owner — plenty of cash, but understands what he doesn’t understand, and lets The Post be The Post — but I’m trying to imagine how we’d have reacted if you sat down at the Austin newspaper’s biz desk in 2000 and told us all that Amazon’s guy would be a newspaper owner in under 20 years. We’d either have laughed, or assumed newspapers had died and that “newspaper owner” meant something euphemistic and weird in the future.
