Knives Out: Wake Up, Dead Man, doesn’t come out until Thanksgiving. I mention this because you might be under the misapprehension that doing TIFF in September, and/or the BFI London Film Festival yesterday, means you can see it soon. You cannot. I always wonder about the wisdom of rushing to get into all these film festivals, but not actually putting your movie out there when people who read reviews from said festivals can act on it. Twice now I have been like, “Yay, I love these movies, I’m glad it’s here,” only to learn we’re still almost two months away from it being released. By the time this lands in theaters (for two weeks, and then onto Netflix), people might be like, “Wait, I thought that already came out,” or, “Did I see that one already?” and descend into apathy. The good news, at least, is that WE will not forget because there will doubtless be a big U.S. premiere. And the other good news is that there is probably plenty of research suggesting this will be fine and that everyone will find it on Netflix and it’ll be one of the longshot Best Picture nods and maybe get one for screenplay. STILL.
