Instagram MVPs of 2020: Gabrielle Union

We visited Gabrielle Union’s Instaglam earlier in the year, but only briefly; since then, we’ve noticed she is a regular source of pandemic fashion moments. Like this:

That’s an Ulla Johnson dress, and I 92 percent love it, and 8 percent wish it didn’t have a big seam and a pattern change in the hip region.

And then in season two she gets recruited to the CIA, which leads to a WHOLE lot of leather. This is Dundas, and I love it on her.

This is Christopher John Rogers. I enjoy the color-blocking, but keep wondering if she is sitting down in every photo because it’s too big and she feels like she can hide that better if she just doesn’t stand.

That Etro dress is fabulous. I think it’s my favorite thing in this entire slideshow.

She’s in Hanifa here. Hanifa is run by a Black woman who caused a sensation with an online presentation that, in part, used digital tricks to make it look like the garments were being worn and walked in by an invisible person (this dress pops up at around the 13 minute mark of the video). It’s perfect for this photo of her at what I assume is the same beach club where Brenda Walsh and company hung out. Very summery but glamorous nonetheless.

This is Miu Miu, and is a jacket that I think of as an Expensive Dandruff.

Wait, hang on, sorry Etro. THIS dress — by Samantha Black, a former Project Runway contestant — might be my favorite in this whole post. Perhaps it’s a tie. It’s SO colorful and kicky, and I love that Gabrielle is supporting a less-known designer in amid the big ones. Everyone is paying closer attention to this stuff on social media now that there are no red carpets, so it’s a big deal and a very smart and generous use of her platform. As with these Fear of God suits:

I love those pin-stripes on her, but find myself wishing she ALSO had gotten badass boots to go with them.

That whole thing is fabulous and we were all ROBBED of not being able to see her dash to and from a building in it, while the hot security guard at AOL Build or whatever tried to make sure no one breached the perimeter.

We’ve covered so many ’90s premieres where outfits ended in jeans, and it was a crazy surprise. This is no less unexpected, but somehow she manages to make it look fashionable and cool, rather than like nobody had a better idea.
