The polls have closed, and the verdict is in: Lupita Nyong’o in Versace was Fug Nation’s favorite sight on the Oscars red carpet. (We didn’t count post-party dresses, because the risk/reward is much lower at something that isn’t televised.)

However, it was close; only about three percent separated Lupita from the runner-up, Miss Allison Janney:

Hard to be mad at either of those choices. Although I didn’t think SNL had any kind of useful take on Allison Janney in its Family Feud sketch this weekend. Why not just put a bird on the actress’s shoulder? Maybe they tried and it fell through (or maybe she quite sensibly was like, “HELL NO KEEP THAT THING’S DEMON CLAWS AWAY”). It wasn’t just her; there wasn’t a take on Sally Hawkins, either, that didn’t involve making fun of mute people and/or sign language. Sometimes that show is so clever and sometimes it’s SO LAZY and the swing gives me whiplash.

Anyway: Onto the worst-dressed. Most of you — a fairly overwhelming majority — picked this:

It’s hard to argue it. For me, the contention that she’s a performance artist of some ilk, or that this is just her thing, doesn’t really hold water for the same reasons that I think it’s okay to criticize Lady Gaga et al: One, calling yourself a performance artist shouldn’t absolve you of responsibility for crazy decisions, and two, nothing excuses being willing to wear this in public — on a televised red carpet, no less — even if you do fancy it as part of a persona. So. I stand fully behind this madness.

But, if you’d prefer to acknowledge the runner-up, it was this:

Andra is very costumey, too, but that is no excuse for this Zac Posen. What in the WORLD were they, in tandem, thinking? Were they thinking of the bloggers? If so, a tip of the bonnet to ye, and I am grateful for the fuggery that greases this blog’s foundational wheels.
