I had kind of… forgotten about Courtney Love? It’s been a hot minute since I saw her anywhere, but she popped up at the National Portrait Gallery in the UK for some party or other, looking as though she’s auditioning for a role in The Buccaneers. That show’s thesis is basically “Americans are loud and laugh and dance and party a lot,” and I feel like Courtney would fit in there nicely — she could swing in as Christina Hendricks’s previously estranged sister, who runs a speakeasy and gets the girls into all kinds of romantic trouble. To me, it’d be more fun than her next project, The Long Home, whose synopsis is, “A young contractor is hired to build a honky-tonk in Tennessee by the man who killed his father,” is directed by freaking James Franco, and stars a bunch of people we would have been glad to see in a movie together in the Aughts: Franco (double the ugh), Danny Masterson apologist Ashton Kutcher (blech), Josh Hartnett (who knew I’d be so glad to see him in Oppenheimer?), Josh Hutcherson (okay, Peeta Mellark was from the twenty-teens, but still), Austin Stowell (Secret Life of the American Teenager), and Lio Tipton (who, in 2008, was on America’s Next Top Model). How did Giancarlo Esposito get dragged into this? We can’t know. But whatever Courtney is doing there, I far prefer the notion of her stirring up drama in the 19th century, nowhere near James Franco.
