Charlize Theron got drafted into Odyssey duty this week, this time for the Chinese premieres. And she gave them her all, but for me it’s the other styling that let her down. This gold gown is by Louis Vuitton, and yes, it’s less of a dress than a decoration. It looks like something you’d hang in the doorway of your dorm room so that your friend can make a grand entrance on her birthday, to a Spice Girls song, before going straight to the station where someone mixes a margarita shot in her open mouth. (I have NOT done this but I did witness it once, and it was a strawberry marg, and the girl ended up sputtering and it spilled down the front of her white dress.) And yet with all that, I think Charlize is carrying the threads very well, but I think her face kind of fades into the background. Which should be very, very hard to do.

This is Givenchy:

Universal Pictures presents THE ODYSSEY Special China Photocall

This dress is extremely cool, and I would pay money to see what it does when she sits in it, but once again the makeup — and, I’d argue, also the hair — have let her down. The rest of her is serving a Sexy Yet Regal vibe. It’s really too bad we can’t get a Women of The Odyssey spinoff film, directed by, say, Gina Prince-Bythewood, making Odysseus a blip in their otherwise full lives. Like, I’m sorry, what do you MEAN Penelope just sat there WEAVING for 20 years? There’s no way.
