I’m re-reading a book right now that’s set in an alt-universe — I first read it when it came out in 2009, and the beans were infants, but there’s a sequel now and I don’t remember it — and one of the throwaway world-building details is that they’ve banned the manufacturing of new spoons. Cate could sell this, and her original top, for a tidy fortune if that world were real. That, or she could busk at a subway station by just twirling and clinking and drumming on herself.
