If you missed it, Beyonce opened the show by performing her nominated song from King Richard in Compton, on a tennis court from Venus and Serena’s youth that they painted the color of the balls themselves — a hue Bey matched, along with her backup dancers. (People has a piece on the details, including a cameo by Blue Ivy.) I feel like… these producers have been so uptight about ratings; promote the Beyonce performance like hell and then put it halfway through, so people can’t just change the channel after she’s done. Those early numbers count, but so does the dropoff Regardless, she was one of a few people in yellow — although for me this slideshow might be won by King Richard’s Aunjanue Ellis, regal in orange. Herein we have what I called the outlier colors: the orange, the yellow, and the brown of the Oscars, none of which quite made up their own slideshow but which together would create a really groovy pair of 1970s pants.
