Jessica said to me last night, when Alicia Keys came out and quietly opened this show under the strangest of news circumstances, that Alicia projects a vibe of “your really supportive and sweet, and possibly slightly stoned, music teacher.” It was exactly the right aura for the Grammys, and they repeatedly let her do exactly that: be sweet, supportive, and ultimately possibly stoned, but in service of wanting to comfort everyone and spread love and positivity. I am rarely heartwarmed during the Grammys, but she made it happen.
