It figures that I tried to match outfits to celebs at this Chanel show, but this was one of the few I punted on — and of course it went to the brand’s newest ambassador, which should have been a slam-dunk guess. Apparently a lot of the denim in that collection is secretly silk, which is cool, and I assume this falls into that; I wonder how it looks in person, because it’s SO convincing in photos. And photos are how 99 percent of us are ever going to engage with this, so it might as well BE real denim. Ergo, while I know a lot of craft would’ve gone into the actual silk, there is an inescapable laziness to the general aesthetic — for example, I have a sleeveless wool cardigan I throw over this same basic outfit when I need a little extra warmth at home. Should Chanel really be doing a $10,000 version of that? The goal clearly is to bring in a younger (but still rich) customer for Chanel, but I wonder how alienating that will be for the older ones who want that nice fabric to be an ACTUAL garment and not just something you tie off over your casualwear, to spruce up your Gap staples. Or, if you buy the whole Chanel shebang… I can’t even really imagine the bill. So yeah, okay, Ayo looks fine. Cute, even. Young and cool. But conceptually, I am curious what kind of legs this Chanel will have.
