Do you remember the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards? They live only vaguely in my memory as something I sometimes saw an ad for while I was watching Behind The Music, or after the fact photos in one of the glossy front pages of Vogue. In their package about the best of its red carpet, i-D neatly describes the event thusly: “Combining the prestige of the Met Gala with the chaotic energy of the VMAs, the VH1/Vogue Fashion Awards was a televised awards show that ran from 1995 to 2002 and honoured the best-of-the-best of the international fashion industry. Much like the VMAs, the ceremony brought together a motley assembly of musicians, Hollywood actors and, of course, the fashion industry’s top players.” Frankly, I am surprised no one tried to bring this event back circa, say, 2012, but I imagine such an undertaking really sapped Anna’s energy — and, of course, VH1 is no longer what it was. (Neither, certainly, is Vogue, and nor am I myself.) Having said that, nothing prevents us from going back in time to 1997, when the party was full of slip dresses, one very iconic TV outfit, a famous glow-up, and a lot of shiny man-shirts.
