The Roses is a remake of the classic War of the Roses, a classic dark comedy in which Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner play a married couple whose infatuation curdles into contempt and then homicidal loathing. I vividly remember seeing it as a kid and expecting it to be the same kind of romp as Romancing the Stone, because at that age I was not actually interrogating or researching my choices; this is also how I came to see The Secret of My Success in the movie theater, believing it to be a documentary about my beloved Michael J. Fox, rather than a terrible movie starring him. Whoops. Anyway, I’m curious how this version will play out, because if I remember correctly the original did a good job showing you why either of them would feel like the victim and why either could be the villain, and ultimately they were both. The trailer for this that I saw seems to tip eeeeeever so slightly into Olivia Colman being worse and I hope that’s inaccurate, and that it actually  maintains the essential balance. We shall see. Or, maybe we shan’t.

P.S. Allison Janney is in here and she looks AMAZING.
