When They See Us is Ava DuVernay’s movie about the Central Park Five — now increasingly known as The Exonerated Five — who were in their youths wrongly convicted of assaulting a jogger and were only exonerated by DNA evidence after they’d served their sentences. The original five got to attend the Emmys and watch an actor win for portraying them, and while in no way does any of that ameliorate the miscarriage of justice, it has to be beyond belief that they are being seen and heard in 2019 in a way they probably thought was impossible in 1989. I hope they had a thunderous, joyful night celebrating the many people who were nominated — and the one winner — for bringing their story to the screen.
