Becoming Elizabeth is a Starz series and the log-line is:
Follow Elizabeth Tudor, an orphaned teenager, who becomes embroiled in the political and sexual politics of the English court on her journey to secure the crown.
“An orphaned teenager” is techically accurate but seems to be underselling how complicated that familial situation is! Anyway, here we’ve got Romola Garai, who is playing elder sister Mary Tudor; Alicia von Rittberg as the titular Elizabeth (FWIW, she herself is not a teenager, she’s 28); and Jessica Raine, who is playing Catherine Parr. (Entertainingly, the Googles tell me that the little girl who played Lyanna Mormont on Game of Thrones is playing Lady Jane Grey, and that feels like good casting. I sort of like the idea of Lady Jane Grey as a total psychopath. No offense to Lyanna Mormont, whose intensity I loved.) Both the Tudor daughters opted for dresses that feel almost period, with very modern touches (like being a beautifully spring-y crop-top/skirt combo) and I appreciate that Romola’s is VERY GOTH because if Mary Tudor was anything…she was pretty goth and intense. Meanwhile, Jessica Raine is just, “I’ve got this very good leather-look dress I’ve been wanting to wear out. Also these great shoes. See you there!”
