Apparently, and I cannot for the life of me remember if it’s always been this way, the DGAs lets each nominated director come up and accept a medal and give a speech just for… being in the running, I guess! Which confused a LOT of people on Twitter because for a hot second people thought Greta Gerwig had beaten Christopher Nolan (she in fact had not, and did not). It’s a nice idea, and probably a way to pad out the evening in a way that isn’t possible at the Oscars without making it, like, a three-day Coachella style nonsense-fest.
