On a night where subtlety did not always reign among those who tackled elements of the theme, I think this is quite lovely.
I am only just noticing how many people chose full topknots or high buns to complement their looks, which I hope was just a coincidence and not everyone’s aesthetic default when confronted with the theme. But it is the right pick here, as is that rich lipstick and the earrings, with the gently draped gown that has gentle and recognizable influences but is not hammering us in the brain with a stereotype. With that black and white Emmys dress of fall 2014, she and Donna Karan are now two-for-two with each other. In red-carpet terms that’s like winning two Super Bowls in a row.
