I saw a clip of John Travolta telling reporters at Cannes that he wore the beret as, essentially, cosplay. He directed this adaptation of his kids’ book, and accordingly felt like he needed to dress up as an Important Artiste, and this was his costume decision. I would love to know if he has ever worked with a director who unironically wore berets as a matter of course; he looks more like a dude who is pretty sure he’s France’s great undiscovered painting talent. Ella Bleu looks very pretty, at least, though the dress sits too low. Someone could clip out a few pieces of that halter tie and fix it in a jiffy, but maybe Scientology considers tailors to be Suppressive Persons. Pity.
