Stella McCartney handed out caps to her attendees that said “About Fucking Time,” as well as apparently some shirts to the famous guests, referring — I believe — to the fact that we are long overdue for fashion lines to be as sustainability-focused as she is. This season’s line was, in her words, made with 91 percent “conscious” materials, and was dedicated to the many endangered species of birds whom she believes are harmed by the fashion industry while people mostly turn a blind eye. I like how loud and proud she is about these issues, but I have to wonder how conscious it is to participate in the fashion cycle is in general — for example, producing high end clothes for all the different fashion calendar seasons and mini-seasons, plus occasional custom work. And I don’t mean that in a bratty way. What she’s doing is impressive; I just wonder if that’s a footprint more of them ought to investigate alongside sourcing of materials.
