Here we are led by our fearless host, Sandra Oh, who committed like HELL to the material even when she knew it was gonna be awkward. (WHAT was that First Man joke?) The problem was that when she did get serious for a second, she was halfway through her speech before the audience realized it wasn’t an elaborate setup. But I like that the Globes gave her the time and space to say something heartfelt right at the top of the show, and it also subtly and wisely reminded everyone that comedy and hosting are not her field of expertise and yet she forged ahead anyway, which probably made us all a lot more likely to be forgiving of the dumber bits.
