Listen, yes — you probably do need a plain, neutral-colored coat, just because you can’t go to every event in your life wearing some cheerfully kooky outerwear. What if you get put on trial for robbing the Louvre or something? You probably need something slightly serious. But that’s not what we’re here to discuss. My own two most-worn coats are a leopard print one (you could maybe wear that to the French trial of the century) (that’s not my exact coat, because mine is really old), and an insane one that’s like orange camouflage that I call my Joe Burrow coat, because it feels like something he would wear. It’s A LOT. But I’ve never worn it without someone complimenting me on it — strangers, I mean. So don’t feel shy with your outerwear. People appreciate a snazzy coat and they really can make you feel more enthused about going out in the cold. My feeling is also that a very dramatic overcoat makes the rest of your outfit look like you put a lot of thought into it, even if you did not. Food for thought!
And coats for you! Also: As always, if you have the energy and inclination, vintage is always a great resource for coats. Not to sound like Grandpa Simpson or whatever, but they don’t make ‘em like they used to!
