Do you ever feel like watching something incredibly gorgeous that will also fill you with BEAUTIFUL DESPAIR? I recommend the 1996 Anthony Minghella adaptation of Michael Ondaatje’s novel The English Patient, starring Juliette Binoche (gorgeous), Kristin Scott Thomas (gorgeous), Ralph Fiennes (gorgeous in half of it), Willem Dafoe (unconventionally gorgeous), Naveen Andrews (OBVIOUSLY gorgeous), and Colin Firth (not as gorgeous in this one as he is in other things, but, like, you know he’s gorgeous inherently so it counts).  Also gorgeous: the costumes, the locations, the soundtrack.  It holds up — and it might also depress you, but you know your heart. What will not (presumably) depress you are these snaps from the 1996 premieres.
