The New York Film Critics’ Circle voted on its award winners in early December, which I guess is one way to keep a tightly curated guest list and a sensible budget: The only celebs you need to feed are the ones picking up trophies. Cate won for Tár, which also nabbed Best Picture, and swept in wearing what I originally thought was trousers and a lopsided tailcoat. It’s actually an asymmetrical skirt — the lead-off look from Stella McCartney’s most recent runway show — and Cate is wearing it with over-the-knee boots, which you can see slightly better here actually:

The lopsidedness is a BIT goofy, but better this way than on the model with her tan gladiator-style shoes. Her Carte Blanchett is in full effect for me here. She’s giving me a cross between Rene Russo in The Thomas Crown Affair — this woman ABSOLUTELY would slink into a robbery scene and solve it better than the cops — and, say, coolly detached artist at her own gallery show. (I haven’t seen the movie yet, but I also buy this being an ensemble Cate’s conductor character would wear.) I have long thought she should play Thursday Next in an adaptation of Jasper Fforde’s books, and this is doing nothing to dissuade me.

By the by, apparently I had downloaded Stella’s show and then completely forgot to upload and post it, so I did it today if you’re curious what else came down the runway:

Some of it is fine! And then there’s the completely sheer sparkly catsuit. There’s ALWAYS freaking one.
