When this Loewe dress came down the catwalk, it was Look #41 in an absolute parade of tomfoolery, so I was too fatigued to process it. Now, three months later and on the majestic person of one Caitriona Balfe, I’m feeling more charitably toward it:

I wish we had her standing up in it; for that you have to go to the full episode on CBS’s website and jump ahead to about the 29 minute mark (it’ll make you watch a few commercials). I have slight beef with Stephen Colbert for parsing her to the audience as being in “the sexy Scottish thing” and then calling her British and just absolutely harping on the sex, but when she came out he correctly ID’d her as Irish and was much less dismissive and had a lot to say and ask about Belfast. I can’t stay mad at you, Stephen. But also, sir, she’s great on Outlander and not because of the sexy sex. Back to the dress: Someone maybe should have built a little support into this for her, somehow, because Caitriona had her baby about five months ago and is probably still making milk, and that can start to feel heavy. But she absolutely shines through all that shimmer, and her shoes are a major upgrade. This, to me, perfectly embodies the fun fashion risk-taker in her without being bonkers bizarre. It also just made me smile, and hell, these days that is truly something. She’s whetted my appetite for the awards run, that’s for sure.
