Every year I have to Google this to remind myself how it’s different than the CFDAs in June, and the answer always seems to be: The CFDAs are for straight-up designers, and the Fashion Fund award is for emerging talent. I think it’s a four-month incubator for three designers, and then one is named the winner and gets $300,000, and the other two get $100,ooo. So really, everyone wins, but one designer wins MORE, and this year that was Pyer Moss. Kirby Jean-Raymond designs for that company, and if you recall, the red-carpet outfits for Issa Rae at the CFDAs and Tracee Ellis Ross at the American Music Awards were both Pyer Moss — and that’s a big coup, because those were events Issa and TER were hosting, at which they announced they would be repping the work of black designers all night. This is great icing on an already impressive cake year. Congrats, sir! The runners up were menswear designer Emily Adams Bode and Jonathan Cohen, who dressed Uzo Aduba up there for the big night. Please, y’all, be delighted with yourselves. I can’t even sew.
