Today on Drinks With Broads, two old crones (us) wondered: Are the VMAs dead? (We also asked, was Justin Timberlake there under duress, why does MTV make this so hard to watch, are we jumping the gun on Spooky Season, and MORE.) In the piece (which is free to all subscribers!), we tied this to a pretty lackluster red carpet, but I’d extend it to the show as well. With a few exceptions — the salute to hip-hop, Shakira, and the performance by Stray Kids being some of them — this year’s telecast felt pretty flat. There’s still plenty to discuss — like WHY is Fall out Boy DOING THIS — but like Nobel Poet Laureate Carrie Bradshaw before me, I couldn’t help but wonder…is this event on its last legs?
