“Big” for a VMAs post can mean volume, or randomness, or swing, or really pretty much anything that constitutes a talking point. We had not one but TWO references to Madonna’s iconic “Like a Virgin” from the first-ever VMAs forty years ago, and of course the debut of Chappell Roan, who brought a rug AND a knight? Chappell wouldn’t say what her inspiration was for this outfit, though she did hint that it connected with her performance — and for that, she wore armor and there was a whole swordfight and a flaming prison, so maybe she was being her own damsel here. (Her glam squad later called it “medieval royal fantasy.”) Is it the VMAs version of pulling a Kelly Taylor and choosing herself? Let’s say yes.
