Alexandra’s Christian Siriano at the L.A. premiere of Tick, Tick… Boom! was a little divisive. Many of you thought I was crackers for liking it, and I completely understand that. But I was so drawn to its drama and its crisp lines and big choices, and she carried it so well. She and her stylist, Alexandra Mandelkorn, have been taking a lot of large swings on this press tour, with the result being that it’s exciting to know Shipp is attending something — like, say, an upcoming array of awards shows?!? — because you can’t predict which version of herself she will bring.

This is another Siriano, deployed with joy:

My opinion changes every time I look at this. Sometimes it’s just straight-up fun, and sometimes I wonder if there’s too much happening with the top. Actually, you know what it partly is? The bust. If you click through the Instagram embeds, the third one is a video of her from behind going up an escalator, and I like it much better.

I love this pink suit, with the bold red accessories…

… but yes, I would have buttoned the shirt JUST a little more and nixed the peek of bra. It doesn’t add anything.

This is a neat find, and something I wish stylists would do more often:

It’s vintage Todd Oldham from 1993. Again, L.A. must be an absolute trove of this stuff, so it’s great to see more people reaching for it. This has a Very Hungry Caterpillar meets Marimekko quality to it that has a very specific context in order to work, and I think Alexandra is making a pretty damn good argument that she is that context.

And here she is in Versace:

I’m gonna pass on the shoes, but of these outfits — and the ones in the slideshow — there’s only one black getup, and one black and white, and the rest are all colorful. It’s cool to see a client and stylist obviously having a lot of fun together, and to see a starlet sidle up to the big stage and take a bunch of risks.
