I miss TRL. For those of you who don’t remember, Total Request Live aired on MTV from a studio above Times Square, and featured The Artists Of The Day being interviewed by whatever personalities replaced the concept of veejays. I can’t decide if its continued existence would help keep me informed of who the next wave of artists are, or if it’d be a non-stop CURTAINS FOR ZOOSHA moment. Probably both. Back in 2004, Vanessa (Minnillo) Lachey hosted it occasionally, and HOO BOY, look at what she wore exactly 22 years ago. The only way this could be more 2004 is if the heels were a tiny bit lower, and were thong sandals. The low-rise diagonal skirt, the skinny belt, using a Carrie Bradshaw flower pin to turn that cardigan into something overwrought and overthought… I miss this, too. It’s from back before exclusive designer deals, when stylists — IF anyone used one — probably pulled more from Forever 21 and Miss Sixty than they did Fendi.

Exactly 21 years, go, in 2005, Ashlee Simpson modeled another classically aughts look:

MTV TRL With Ashlee Simpson & John Legend

Cropped jacket, long button-up shirt, very low-rise jeans, pumps… all in August. This entire outfit probably came from bebe, or Express, or any number of stores at the Beverly Center. This entire outfit is what someone would have worn on 90210 if they were showing up to try and buy the Peach Pit After Dark. I wish MTV would rerun old TRL episodes so that the kids of today can be exposed to all these important historical texts. Teach them in school! Somebody quickly please whip up a curriculum for AP Total Request Live.
