I honestly cannot argue with “Gothic Fairies” as the inspiration here — sometimes, the designers spout a lot of incoherent blah-blah and I can’t see it in the finished collections, but the Mulleavys knew where they were going, and they zoomed there with aplomb. Some of these are fascinating, some are BONKERS, some are just run-of-the-mill hideous. There are bonnets. Explosions of flowers. Sheers. Questionable knitwear. Prints of what I think are their mom’s commissioned fairy drawings. And, in a too-literal touch, wings. But the whole thing is deeply theatrical, and definitely worth a return to a proper runway because I bet it was a hoot to watch unfold in person. Real talk: I want Andrea Riseborough to show up at the Oscars in the most outlandish one she can get, and I picked one for Riley Keough’s Daisy Jones premiere.
