These outfits are uneven at best, but it looks like this event was as much a welcome shot of earnestness as ever. We went one year and it was a really positive and emboldening experience — it’s nice to have a break from cynicism and/or panic — and the celebs usually bring their oratory A-game. Zendaya was chosen to present a trophy to Maxine Waters, and the event’s live blog quoted heavily her intro:

“Have you ever been the only woman in a room? What about the only black woman in a room? Our next honoree has reminded us over and over again when we are faced with the despair and defeating odds of that room, we can not allow it to intimidate us. Instead she teaches us how to let it fuel us… She reminds us that we must be fearless in how we represent ourselves in a room where we are not always being represented.”

And now let us all reclaim our time by looking at pants.
