This is such an interesting period in styling. The aughts felt like anything goes, where celebs were just as likely to wear random stuff they had in their closets as they were anything curated by a person; the twenty-teens and early 2020s moved into heavy styling, often to the point of appearing to walk right off the runway. Now, we're increasingly veering into cosplay: Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods, Lili Reinhart paying tribute to romcoms, pretty much anything Zendaya and Law do together, McKenna Grace with this movie, and now Elle Fanning, too. It's plenty fun, and might be more of a satisfying creative challenge for both star and stylist, but I also wonder if it takes a pleasant amount of pressure off these women – because it IS mostly women – to identify or display any particular personal style if they don't feel like it. Perhaps putting up a sartorial wall makes it easier for them to project a version of themselves when they're out in public and hold onto a little piece of their true inner selves. These are the enduring lessons of Beyonce and Sasha Fierce.
Or, it's not that deep and people just like being costumey.
