Milly Alcock is playing Supergirl in James Gunn’s DC universe, and her standalone movie comes out this summer. Jason Momoa is NOT playing Aquaman in it, so it’s official, those other DC flicks are no longer canon. He looks fine but it’s almost jarring to see him without anything bright and/or pink on his person.
As for Milly: Folks often go kitschy at Cinemacon — Rachel Brosnahan wore a vintage Galliano newspaper dress to promote her role as Lois Lane — but having a brand make a Supergirl sweater is one thing, and having one replace the signature S with their own logo is quite another. It makes Chanel the story, more than Supergirl or Supergirl. I wonder how this custom sweater came about**; it’s not a gimmick that feels very Chanel, either then or now, and I suspect it signals that they’re ever more desperate to attract The Youths. Especially given the lazy way it’s styled with giant jeans and a peek of their signature sensible shoes. It’s like they put ALL their thought into how big to make their interlocking Cs and none into what else might make the outfit sing. I guess making her their billboard took precedence.
** And it didn’t! I even WROTE about the terrible subway station show they used it in, and said that I would laugh if someone in Superman wore it. Well, she’s in Supergirl, does that count?!? I’m concerned about my lack of memory on this front!!!! The show was in December, so probably this wasn’t made with an eye toward this future collaboration, though you never do know… maybe they made it in GENERAL knowing this day would eventually come. I like it better now that I newly remember it wasn’t just for this. But I stand by the terrible styling, saying they’re desperate for The Youths, and not being into logos.
