As you may have heard, possibly against your will, Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift got married at Madison Square Garden in New York City this weekend — I cannot be the only person who saw “JUST&T MARRIED” on the marquee and thought AT&T was involved somehow — and they invited almost any athlete, celebrity, agent, or influencer who had ever sneezed within a reasonable distance of them. My feed on Instagram was FULL of “suggested posts” from people I have never seen before, all dressed up and either claiming to have been at the wedding or heavily implying it, always with a Taylor Swift song playing. I am so curious how many of them actually went, and who is clout-chasing and very carefully not saying anything that is a lie (“special night in New York”) but also very carefully hoping everyone will assume they were on the guest list. I’ve done my best to give you a sense of it all, from the very limited on-the-street photos that Getty has, to the Instagram posts popping up. I eventually ran out of steam; we also had tight ends George Kittle and Kyle Juszczyk, QB Matt Stafford, Kaia Gerber and Cindy Crawford, Rich Eisen (sports talking head), Pattie Boyd, and her band and all of the Eras Tour dancers. (Kam Saunders brought his mother. I LOVE Kam and their relationship.) Notable absence, in terms of the New York scene? Anna Wintour, until further notice (I have not seen any reports that she went; various outlets claim Anna offered to help Taylor source her dress but that Taylor politely declined). [Anna was at Wimbledon on July 4 and the wedding was July 3; it’s POSSIBLE she booked out of the wedding and got right on a plane, BUT. -J] And ZERO Kardashians or Jenners, it seems.
Stevie Nicks and Paul McCartney reportedly performed, and surely were not the only ones. The bride and groom wore custom Dior, but we haven’t seen photos yet — please ignore the zillions of AI slop photos that are popping up all over social media; you will not see Taylor Swift’s wedding gown for the first time from an account called blognews.stars, I promise. Adam Sandler officiated, and I have never heard anything bad about him as a person, although I am not a huge fan of some of the bros he ritually employs; still, I’ll bet he did a great job. Taylor’s brother stood up for her, Travis’s brother stood up for him, and there were no other members of a wedding party — a sweet and almost surprising bit of restraint given how enormous the guest list was otherwise. And given the fact that, per People, the vows (which they wrote themselves)(allegedly)(do we think Travis wrote a 20-minute speech alone?)(and then they read them from gold books?!?!?) were 20 minutes EACH. Was this a graduation or a wedding? I guess Taylor DOES seem like she would be determined to be valedictorian of marriage vows.
And of course there are rumors they’re going to turn the whole thing into a documentary. I’m sure they DID have videographers all over the place, and if they want to make an actual publicly viewable movie out of their blissful union, well, have at it, I guess. They admirably clamped down on leaks up to this point, so I guess they’re enjoying a little privacy for a moment. I freely admit that I am simultaneously and hypocritically rolling my eyes at the idea of this, while also fully aware that I will be seated for it.
I have opined a lot about the bits and bobs that leaked out in the runup to this wedding, but I’m glad to report that it seems to have gone off without a logistical hitch in terms of the denizens of New York City being able to get around and live their lives, and I applaud the T&T Music Factory for making $26 million in donations to 20 charities nationwide in advance of the big day (nine of which were local to New York). I think there are rational arguments to be made both for and against this whole concept of sculpting a wedding inside a sports arena, and one may still wonder if this was a statement of love or a statement of celebrity. But I’m a romantic at heart, it’s not JUST a lump of coal in there, so in the end I just hope these two got what they wanted from this event and are crazy happy together and sunning themselves someplace far away and undetected.
And that SOMEDAY soon they’ll let us see the dress.
